Job Description of a ICF Certified Coach

Before life coaches can help their clients, they first need to understand what those clients want. This can be difficult because some people may not know exactly what they desire, while others may have extremely specific goals. A life coach typically starts with a discovery call in order to determine if they are the right fit for the client and to make sure that the coach is willing to commit themselves fully to helping the client reach their objectives.

Once the client and coach decide to work together, the coach develops a plan to help the client reach their targets. They have regular meeting sessions where the coach offers guidance on how to deal with obstacles and celebrate milestones. According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, coaching sessions can last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. A coach may work with a client for a number of years, depending on how often the client needs help. Some life and relationship coaches meet in person with their clients, while others conduct sessions over the phone or through video conferencing.

What are the Job and Career Opportunities and Requirements as a Life Coach?

Many life, business and relationship coaches are self-employed, so it is important to understand the basics of running a small business. This includes marketing, networking, accounting and bookkeeping. Scheduling and logistics, as well as technical acuity, are also key to running a successful coaching business.

ICF credentialed coaches can start their own coaching practice by becoming certified through ICF Coaching Certification. For many people, the appeal of life and relationship coaching jobs comes from the desire to help others achieve their goals.

In 2015, the average annual income for all coach practitioners, which also includes sports coaches, was $61,900. This is well above the median annual salary for all workers. However, the current figures have shown a tremendous increase in the pay-out structure of a professional coach.
